A MÁQUINA DE VER O TEMPO / THE MACHINE TO SEE THE TIME

This was the title of one my works in Project 1 some years ago; the ever present theme of the cube. The place I chose for my intervention should be on the beach in Costa da Caparica. I thought of that exercise when I realised that the Requalification Program for Costa da Caparica, includes to erase iconic elements, in this case the palheiros, the fisherman’s houses that later on gave shape to the banheiros, the commercial estableshiments serving food and drinks, equipped with locker rooms and restrooms, besides the vigilance over the bathers.

There seems to be a disdain for the iconographic value of this vernacular architecture, confusing by prejudice or intentionally the intrinsic value of it with the degradation occurred to the archetype, functional or  formal.

As toalhas definem a área territorial.

My project was an ironical approach to the ritual of going to the beach, for me a very peculiar way of behaving in public. Families and couples spread on the sand in a very compact way. The bathing towels define the territory. There they oil their bodies, some elegant others caricatural. I had a coleague with a belly as big as a nine months pregnant woman and a hairdo in nest style, the few remaining hairs combed in a curl to hide the boldness. He felt imposing in his leopard skin thong whit a shiny aluminium comb at the waist.
People sunbathing with a very careful timing to change position. Munching the snacks brought from home. Checking around, but above all creating an isolation barrier, a cocoon. It is as if the apartement walls became transparent and nobody is aware of it.
I used the archetype of the palheiro, the building materials, the seting on stakes, the vivid colours to create an object with several openings, decomposing the original cubic form and letting the sunlight come in, witnessing the change of time as the light projected on the walls and floor slowly move. The main opening turns to the sea framing the view and making the observer inside the cube as if he should be in a huge old photographic camera.
The stairs under the shade double as access to the interior and amphitheatre to enjoy the view.

A sliding box painted red on the upper surface of the cube reveals the sky. The box works as an episcope, allowing a discreet observation of the crowd on the beach. Only those entering the cube will understand what’s going on. An innocent and irresistible peep show, that immediately will give place to the disquieting question: “and what if I also have been observed?!”
How easy is to judge the others...
